Julian Fellowes ha dedicato Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale a Dame Maggie Smith.
L’acclamata attrice – che ha interpretato Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess di Grantham, nell’Abbazia di Downton – è deceduta nel settembre 2024, all’età di 89 anni, e Julian ha rivelato che voleva che il terzo film nel franchise fosse “haunted by Maggie”.
Parlando con l’Hollywood Reporter, Julian ha condiviso: “Penso che tutti abbiamo sentito che se ci fosse un terzo film, volevamo che fosse perseguitato da Maggie.
“There is a theme of Maggie going through the film, and then at the end, you see her when Mary is having all her flashbacks. I like that. She was an iconic figure … And that’s another reason to finish.”
Julian – che ha creato la serie Downton – sente che il franchise sta finendo al momento perfetto.
Ha spiegato: “Abbiamo sempre saputo dove stavamo andando.
“I’m not a fan of talcum powder hair and wobbly stick acting. To go on, we would be pushing our luck a bit and eventually be facing the Second World War.”
Julian crede anche che gli attori e le attrici siano ora felici di allontanarsi dal franchise cinematografico.
Ha detto: “Penso che gli attori ne avessero avuto abbastanza – nel modo più bello, c’erano molte buone amicizie e ci incontreremo sempre come membri del club di Downton … ma sento anche che, nella vita, devi sapere quando lasciar andare le cose, sia professionale o romantica o altro.
“There is a moment when you think, ‘It’s time to bring this to an end.’ And I felt that about the show.”
Downton ha avuto un enorme successo negli Stati Uniti e Julian apprezza il sostegno che ha ricevuto negli Stati Uniti.
Lo scrittore di 76 anni ha dichiarato: “L’America ha reso un’esperienza adorabile.
“People are just as entitled to dislike what you’ve made as they are entitled to like it. And I sometimes may have to remind myself of that a bit. But I felt a bit sad that in the country of origin, we couldn’t celebrate its success a bit more. So I was very grateful to the Americans for celebrating it as much as they did.”
All’inizio di quest’anno, Hugh Bonneville ha osservato che Downton Abbey: il Grand Finale avrebbe servito da “proper tribute” a Maggie.
