A BBC spokesperson has apologised for failing to remove a racial slur from its broadcast of the BAFTA Film Awards on Sunday. Un portavoce della BBC si è scusato per non aver rimosso un insulto razzista dalla trasmissione dei BAFTA Film Awards di domenica.
L’attivista della sindrome di Tourette John Davidson, interpretato da Robert Aramayo nel film drammatico I Swear, ha involontariamente gridato la parola N quando le star di Sinners Michael B. Jordan e Delroy Lindo sono saliti sul palco per consegnare un premio alla Royal Festival Hall di Londra.
Nonostante la cerimonia sia stata trasmessa con due ore di ritardo, il momento è stato comunque trasmesso su BBC One domenica sera ed è rimasto su BBC iPlayer lunedì mattina.
In una dichiarazione, un portavoce della BBC si è scusato per non aver modificato o silenziato la parola offensiva.
“Some viewers may have heard strong and offensive language during the BAFTA Film Awards. This arose from involuntary verbal tics associated with Tourette syndrome, and as explained during the ceremony, it was not intentional,” hanno detto. “We apologise that this was not edited out prior to broadcast and it will now be removed from the version on BBC iPlayer.”
I tic di Davidson si sono sentiti più volte durante la cerimonia e il conduttore Alan Cumming si è scusato due volte per il linguaggio forte dell’ospite.
“Tourette’s syndrome is a disability and the tics you have heard tonight are involuntary, which means the person who has Tourette syndrome has no control over their language. We apologise if you were offended,” ha affermato.
Secondo Variety, Davidson ha lasciato la cerimonia di sua spontanea volontà a metà dello spettacolo.
Hannah Beachler, la scenografa di Sinners, ha fatto saltare in aria il “throw away apology” tramite X.
“The situation is almost impossible, but it happened 3 times that night, and one of the three times was directed at myself on the way to dinner after the show,” ha scritto. “I understand and deeply know why this is an impossible situation. I know we must handle this with grace and continue to push through.
“Ma ciò che ha peggiorato la situazione sono state le scuse buttate via del “se ti fossi offeso” alla fine dello spettacolo. Naturalmente ci siamo offesi.”
Meanwhile, Jordan’s former The Wire co-star Wendell Pierce wrote it was “esasperante” that the Sinners actors didn’t receive a “completo e pieno di gola” apology immediately.
Aramayo, who won the Best Actor BAFTA for his portrayal of Davidson, came to his defence in the press room after his win, insisting, “Non è urlare oscenità, non è essere offensivo, è la sindrome di Tourette e sono tic.”
Come il 54enne, circa il 20 per cento delle persone affette dalla sindrome di Tourette soffrono di coprolalia, che li porta a produrre in modo incontrollabile parole o frasi oscene, tabù e socialmente inaccettabili.
