Paul Mescal è scioccato dalla quantità di “agency” ha come attore.
La star di Hamnet ha potuto lavorare su progetti appassionanti nelle prime fasi della sua carriera e crede che ciò derivi dalla sua lucidità nel suo approccio al settore.
In un’intervista con Collider, Paul ha detto: “Penso che la cosa che mi ha sorpreso è che come attore hai più libertà d’azione di quanto pensi di avere se sai quali film vuoi fare.
“I’ve always assumed that there’s this kind of success, and then you are suddenly in Fast and Furious 12. And it was weird, those things never came my way, actually, because I never really went looking for them.”
L’attore irlandese ha continuato: “Questo è ciò che intendo per controllo che hai. Se sai cosa vuoi fare e sai con chi vuoi lavorare, è un privilegio enorme perché hai accesso.
“You can set up a meeting with Chloe Zhao in the mountains in Telluride and have a conversation, and that’s really exciting, but it also feels like you have agency. Because I was always afraid that the concept of Hollywood takes that agency away, and I’m sure it does for some actors.”
Mescal, 29 anni, lo sente “Hollywood actors” sono oggi più globali di quanto lo fossero in passato.
La star di Gladiator II ha detto: “Quando non cresci in questo ecosistema, come sono cresciuto io a Maynooth, non è come crescere a Londra e avere attori e l’industria intorno a te.
“I suppose being an actor in London, to me, feels the same as being an actor in Hollywood. I think the world is kind of becoming more globalised, and it feels like you can be a ‘Hollywood actor’, in inverted commas, kind of anywhere in the world now, which is cool.”
Paul interpreta William Shakespeare in Hamnet di Chloe Zhao – una drammatizzazione del matrimonio del Bardo con Agnes Hathaway (Jessie Buckley) – e sapeva che l’acclamato film era speciale la prima volta che lo ha visto.
Quando gli è stato chiesto quando si è reso conto del potenziale del film, ha detto: “Penso quando ho iniziato a provare con Jessie, prima che iniziassimo a girare.
“Avevo letto la sceneggiatura, quindi ero consapevole che il limite per ciò che il film avrebbe potuto essere, a mio avviso, era piuttosto alto.
“Volevo andare oltre, credo, con uno dei più grandi attori del nostro tempo e uno dei più grandi registi del nostro tempo con questo materiale. Era qualcosa che sentivo avrebbe potuto essere, ed è stata, un’esperienza straordinaria.
“Then, watching it for the first time in a studio space in London, I was like, ‘Oh, this is the film that I felt like we were making. This is the film we made’, which I don’t think is often the case. So yeah, it was pretty early days for me.”
