Gabrielle Anwar ha rivelato di aver avuto esperienza “violent rages” a causa del suo disturbo bipolare non farmacologico.
L’attrice Burn Notice ha ammesso di aver dato un pugno in faccia a suo marito, apertamente parlando di resistere all’assunzione di farmaci per la sua malattia in un franco saggio personale.
“For years, I resisted medication,” Gabrielle, 54 anni, riflessa in un “as told to” saggio su Business Insider.
“I was vegan, holistic, and saw pharmaceuticals as a flaw, something shameful. And honestly, I didn’t want to lose the highs of mania; they made me feel powerful.”
Avendo vissuto episodi maniacali fin dall’infanzia, per molto tempo Gabrielle non era consapevole che la sua malattia avesse un nome.
“By the time I hit adolescence, I was emotionally unstable,” ha ricordato. “I believe I had my first manic episode around age 11 when I started menstruating. I was expelled from school and deeply ashamed.”
Dopo aver ricevuto una diagnosi, il mancato trattamento dei suoi sintomi ha portato a incidenti drastici.
“The lows were unbearable,” Gabrielle continuò. “I experienced violent rages that frightened the people I loved. I once punched my now-husband in the face twice during an episode early in our relationship. I thought he’d walk away. Instead, he stayed. He loved all of me, even the broken parts.”
Gabrielle, ora madre di tre figli e nonna di uno, è sposata con l’uomo d’affari Shareef Malnik, 67 anni.
Ha spiegato che è passato molto tempo prima che riuscisse a raggiungere un senso di stabilità emotiva.
“It took until my 40s to find the right medication, the right brand, dosage, and combination,” Gabrielle ha condiviso. “It was a process; healing doesn’t happen overnight.”
