Wes Anderson ha ammesso di non aver mai più parlato con Gene Hackman dopo aver lavorato insieme ai Royal Tenenbaums quasi 25 anni fa.
Hackman è morto quest’anno, all’età di 95 anni, con la storia insolita di Anderson, in cui ha suonato il patriarca titolare di una famiglia di ex prodigi, uno degli ultimi che ha fatto prima di ritirarsi dalla recitazione.
Tuttavia, a differenza di molte delle stelle dei film del regista, come Bill Murray o Jason Schwartzman, non hanno mai stretto un’amicizia duratura.
Apparentemente il duo è sceso dal piede sbagliato a causa della tradizione del cineasta del Grand Budapest Hotel di pagare a tutti i suoi attori una commissione fissa identica.
“Gene was very annoyed about the money,” Anderson ha detto al Sunday Times. “He was furious. Also, he didn’t want to do the film anyway. I talked him into it – I just didn’t go away. And everybody else said yes to the salary, so Gene just went with it – and that just became our way.”
Il regista ammette che oltre a una breve parola dopo l’uscita del film, lui e Hackman semplicemente non hanno mai più parlato.
“In fact he left without saying goodbye,” Il 56enne ha aggiunto. “He was grumpy – we had friction. He didn’t enjoy it. I was probably too young and it was annoying to him.”
Tuttavia, il cinque volte vincitore dell’Oscar ha detto che la stella scontrosa “liked” Il film finito e che vorrebbe essere stato più accomodante sul set.
“He told me he didn’t understand it when we were shooting,” Anderson si è lamentato. “I wish I’d shown him ten minutes, early on. Then, maybe, he would have said, ‘OK, I get it.'”
