Valerie Bertinelli ha rotto il silenzio riguardo agli abusi sessuali subiti quando aveva solo 11 anni.
L’attrice 65enne ha parlato del trauma che ha vissuto da bambina, spiegando che dopo anni di guarigione ha imparato a non provare vergogna per gli abusi subiti.
In una nuova intervista con People, Valerie ha ammesso che inizialmente non aveva intenzione di condividere la sua storia.
“I had no plans to reveal this,” ha detto allo sbocco. “This was going to be a book about teaching people how to love themselves. I did not know that I would go this far.”
La star di One Day at a Time si riferiva al suo nuovo libro, Getting Naked, in cui approfondisce “nitty gritty and getting to the parts that I thought were shameful and come to find out they’re not.”
All’inizio del libro, Valerie ha incluso di proposito una sua foto all’età di 11 anni “because that was the little girl that was sexually abused.”
“And it boggles my mind that this little girl was taken advantage of that way,” ha continuato. “It boggles my mind because it’s still happening … and I’m furious about it. And we need to start speaking up and saying, ‘Enough.'”
L’attrice ha aggiunto che l’ha presa “at least” 10 anni per trovare il coraggio di parlare degli abusi subiti.
“The very first time I said it out loud to my therapist, I thought I’m going to feel better now. It got worse before it got better,” Valerie ha ricordato. “I maybe ate a little bit more, drank a little bit more. When you stop eating things for comfort, stop drinking alcohol, it exposes your feelings. You can deal with them or not. And I chose to deal with them.”
Valerie ha notato che dopo anni di lavoro non si vergogna più di quello che le è successo, aggiungendo: “I’m p**sed off that it happened. Nobody deserves that.”
Una svolta arrivò nel 2024 quando l’attrice subì un “huge anxiety attack”che l’ha spinta a esplorare la vergogna del proprio corpo e l’autocritica che aveva portato avanti per anni.
“All of that shame had nothing to do with my body,” dice. “It was just something to take out my shame on. My poor body. I was so mean to it.”
