Bill Nighy viene riconosciuto maggiormente per strada durante le vacanze di Natale grazie alla popolarità duratura del suo classico festivo Love Actually.
L’attore britannico ha interpretato il ruolo della vecchia rock star Billy Mack, che spera di tornare con una nuova canzone festosa, nella commedia romantica natalizia del 2003 di Richard Curtis.
Nonostante abbia 22 anni, Love Actually è più popolare che mai ed è un film visto da molti ogni anno come tradizione natalizia.
Come risultato dell’impatto culturale di Love Actually, Nighy, 76 anni, ha notato di essere più famoso e riconoscibile durante le festività natalizie.
“It’s fabulous that it carries on. I mean, I am more famous at Christmas, there’s no question,” ha detto nel podcast Table Manners. “A woman came up to me the other day and said, ‘You’re Mr Christmas, aren’t you?'”
La star di Boat That Rocked ha condiviso che il suo ruolo nel film di successo lo ha aiutato “cruise through certain things” nel corso degli anni.
Citando un esempio, ha spiegato, “I think I hold the record for getting a visa out of the American Embassy. I mean, it took eight minutes. I think they know my work (but) I could be fooling myself and I just got lucky.”
Nel film, Billy Mack ritorna con una cover festosa di Love Is All Around, giustamente intitolata Christmas Is All Around, che è in cima alle classifiche.
Nighy ha notato che una delle battute più famose di Mack gli viene spesso citata in pubblico.
“When Love Actually first came out, the kids across the street where I was living used to chase me down the street shouting, ‘Hey, kids don’t buy drugs. Become a rock star. People give you them for free!’ which is a joke (from the film),” ha ricordato.
La stessa frase una volta tornò a perseguitarlo mentre stava attraversando il processo di immigrazione dal Canada agli Stati Uniti e si trovò faccia a faccia con un agente dell’immigrazione con un “big black moustache”.
“He eventually pointed at me, and he said, ‘Hey, kids don’t buy drugs. Become a rock star. People give you them for free. Am I right? Am I right?'” si ricordò. “I was like, ‘Drugs?! Noooo, no, no, no. I’ve got no drugs.'”
Il film festoso e di benessere presentava un cast corale che includeva Keira Knightley, Andrew Lincoln, Liam Neeson, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman ed Emma Thompson.
