Josh O’Connor e Paul Mescal si rifiutarono di realizzare The History of Sound l’uno senza l’altro.
Il dramma romantico d’epoca segue la relazione tra due uomini, Lionel e David, che si incontrano in un conservatorio di musica nel 1917 e successivamente intraprendono un viaggio di ricerca per raccogliere canzoni popolari.
Gli attori si sono incontrati su Zoom nel 2020 dopo che O’Connor ha visto la performance straordinaria di Mescal nello show televisivo, Persone normali, e da allora sono amici.
Le star più richieste desideravano realizzare The History of Sound da cinque anni, ma la produzione continuava a essere rimandata perché non erano mai disponibili contemporaneamente.
Tuttavia, hanno insistito affinché il regista Oliver Hermanus aspettasse che i loro programmi si allineassero invece di trovare sostituti che avessero più disponibilità.
“Paul and I were constantly unavailable, and we both refused to make it with anyone else,” O’Connor ha detto a IndieWire. “So we would get a date in, and then we kick it down the road, and then someone else would get another job. So we kick it down the road.”
Alla fine, O’Connor ha dovuto racchiudere tutte le sue scene in un intervallo di tre settimane tra i suoi impegni promozionali per Challengers e La Chimera l’anno scorso.
“So we shot all my stuff first in three weeks, and then I left Paul and Oliver to do it,” ha aggiunto. “The script was so good; it felt like one of those projects where you could lead with instinct, in the knowledge that I was playing opposite Paul, who’s so gifted.”
Mentre il progetto stesso “felt like a breeze”l’attore britannico ha ammesso di averlo ancora “great difficulty” avvolgendo la bocca attorno all’accento americano, anche se alcune volte lo ha fatto con successo sullo schermo.
“You do some gymnastics in your mouth to say the letter R,” ha condiviso. “It’s drawn out, whereas the American accent is a relaxed R, and so it’s difficult for me to move my mouth in the way that it’s supposed to for an American accent. It takes me a long time to get it right.”
The History of Sound uscirà nei cinema britannici il 23 gennaio.
