Lesley Manville è grata di non essere stata molto famosa quando era più giovane.
In una conversazione con l’attore di Friends David Schwimmer per la rivista Interview, l’attrice britannica ha spiegato che crede che il suo approccio misurato alla fama derivi dal fatto che la sua carriera non è salita alle stelle da un giorno all’altro.
“I think it’s because I was never a flavour of the month. I was never an overnight success,” ha detto. “I started acting early, in the days when nobody thought of going to America, nobody thought of going to L.A. and doing pilot season.”
“I was working pretty consistently at the Royal Court Theatre through my 20s and 30s,” ha continuato. “Nobody thought of being famous. It just wasn’t on the agenda at all.”
L’attrice di Phantom Thread ha continuato ricordando che il suo ex marito, la star di Slow Horses Gary Oldman, è stato invitato a Hollywood all’inizio della sua carriera.
“When my first husband, Gary Oldman, did a couple of British films and they opened up a door for him in America, that was so unusual then. So unusual,” disse a David. “Whereas now, I’m so glad I wasn’t certainly at the level I’m at now back then, because it’s too much to maintain.”
Tuttavia, Lesley, 69 anni, ha riconosciuto che da quando è apparsa nella serie Netflix The Crown nei panni della Principessa Margaret, è diventata più ampiamente riconosciuta negli Stati Uniti.
“This is the first time I’ve been here substantially for some years, and I have noticed the difference now,” ha affermato. “I mean, I walked four blocks the other day and by the time I got to the fourth block, I’d been stopped six times.”
